Friends History

In 1977, a small group of interested, dedicated volunteers joined together to form the Friends of the Leominster Public Library. This non-profit organization has grown from a few energetic individuals to 500+ individual, family, and corporate members. These members, whether active or non-active, all provide much needed “extra” support for the Library. Over the past 40+ years, the Friends have raised over $800,000 for the Leominster Public Library. In addition to raising funds, the Friends lobby for important library issues and legislation on the federal, state, and local levels.

New members are always welcome to join. For further information, contact the Library's Information Desk at 978-534-7522 Ext 3.

Executive Board

The Friends are governed by an executive board whose officers are elected for a one-year term at the annual June meeting.

Officers include: President, Vice President, Recording and Corresponding Secretaries, and Treasurer. Standing Committees include Finance and Nominating Committee. Chairs for the Membership, Book Sale, and Volunteer Committees are appointed by the president.

Membership

The Friends membership year runs from July through June. New and former members are always encouraged to join. Membership forms are available at the Library's service desks and can be downloaded from here.

Newsletter

The Friends of the Leominster Public Library publish a bi-monthly newsletter, Between Friends, which includes news and information about the Friends and library happenings. All membership categories receive the newsletter.

AmazonSmile

If you shop at AmazonSmile.com and select Leominster Public Library as your charity of choice, the AmazonSmile Foundation will make a gift to the Friends equal to 0.5% of the purchase price.

Amazon Smile is the same Amazon you already know—same products, same prices. You can even use your existing account and preferred delivery! Purchases made on Amazon's regular site do not generate a gift to the Friends; only purchases made through Amazonsmile.com do. There is no charge to participate and no fees are deducted from the donation amount.

Book Sales

The Friends hold book sales throughout the year on Thursday evenings from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on the Main Floor and the Friend's Book Sale Room in the lower level. There is elevator access to the lower level. There is also a "First Saturday Book Sale" on the first Saturday of the month from September through May from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.

Donations for Book Sales

We are happy to accept used books and DVDs that are in good condition. We are unable to accept: textbooks, engineering, computer or travel books more than two years old, magazines, encyclopedias, videocassettes or VHS, and audiobooks. We are also unable to accept items that are in poor condition because they are torn, marked, soiled, or unpleasant smelling.

Donating Used Materials

If you have books or other materials to donate you may bring them to the Circulation Desk on the main floor of the library. If you bring in more than one or two books at a time, they should be in a bag or a box. If you have more than one bag or box to donate, please contact the library's Assistant Director at 978-534-7522 ext 3597 to make arrangements before bringing the items in.

All donations become the property of the library and may be added to the library collection or sold by the Friends of the Library.

If you would like a receipt for your donation, please count the number of items (e.g., 45 books and 10 DVDs) before you bring the materials to the library. We will gladly give you a receipt indicating the number of items donated, however, we are not able to place a monetary value on your gift.
